Calling on Congress: Ensure Patient Privacy in Health Information Technology Bills

March 27, 2008 - More than 500 psychology leaders from across the United States and its territories, as well as Canada, participated in the recent 2008 State Leadership Conference (SLC) in Washington, DC, sponsored by the APA Practice Organization. The culmination of the conference involved approximately 300 meetings of SLC participants with their members of Congress and staff on Capitol Hill.
In addition to advocating for full mental health parity legislation and increased Medicare reimbursement for psychologists, these grassroots advocates for professional psychology helped to amplify the APA Practice Organization's (APAPO) call for adequate privacy protections in health information technology (HIT) legislation. The APAPO considers patient records privacy and security as the necessary cornerstone of any congressional bills intended to promote the development of HIT.
