Dr. Russ Newman Announces His Departure

August 9, 2007 -- Russ Newman, PhD, JD, recently announced that he is leaving his executive management position at the American Psychological Association (APA) at the end of 2007 to become Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Alliant International University.
Dr. Newman, who joined the staff of APA in 1986, has served as executive director for professional practice since 1993. In addition to his 14-year tenure as executive director for the APA Practice Directorate, Newman also has headed the APA Practice Organization (APAPO) since its inception in 2001. An affiliate of APA, the APAPO is focused on promoting the professional interests of practitioners and is able to engage in certain advocacy activities that the tax laws prevent the APA from doing.
“Over the years, I have been lucky to be involved with so many people, projects and programs within the APA and the APAPO,” said Newman, “all focused on working to make the practice of psychology better for psychologists and their patients.”
In announcing his departure, Newman also observed: “Recent years have been challenging ones for practitioners, and I am glad to have had the opportunity to contribute to important efforts toward eliminating obstacles that interfere with optimal practice and to working to help position psychology for a thriving future. Many of these activities are ongoing, and they will continue to be needed as long as significant challenges for our profession remain . .. . . It has been an honor and privilege to work in a position that provides an opportunity to influence the direction of our profession and to serve the membership of the Association.”
Dr. Newman said he looks forward to continuing his efforts on behalf of professional practice in his activities at Alliant, which includes the California School of Professional Psychology, the Marshall Goldsmith School of Management, the Graduate School of Education, the Center for Forensic Studies and Alliant’s undergraduate programs.
APA has begun the process of finding a successor for Dr. Newman.
