Ready or Not? NPI Deadline is May 23
by Communications Staff
April 23, 2008-If you are not using your National Provider Identifier number (NPI) by May 23, 2008, you risk having your claims rejected by all health insurers with which you do business. And if you are a "covered entity" under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), you may be subject to enforcement action by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).
CMS plans to enforce the rule beginning May 23, and has statutory authority to issue penalties of $100 to $25,000 per violation.
More immediate than the possibility of federal penalties, however, is the risk of interruptions in your cash flow. Beginning May 23, 2008, federal law directs payers not to process claims that lack an NPI.
For more information about obtaining and using your NPI, see A Practitioner's Guide to the NPI at the end of this article.
