The number of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) staff psychologists rose by 19 percent from 2003 to the first quarter of 2007. The recent growth in psychologist employment opportunities is largely attributable to the VA's mental health enhancement initiatives.

CMS Extends April 1 Deadline for Using New Claim Forms
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has delayed until at least June 1, 2007 the date by which providers who bill paper claims to Medicare must use the new CMS-1500 form. The deadline extension does not directly affect the May 23 deadline for providers to begin using their National Provider Identifier.

Revised APA Record Keeping Guidelines Are Now Available
The APA Record Keeping Guidelines (RKG) have been revised to take into account changes in practice such as electronic record keeping as well as legislative and regulatory requirements including HIPAA. The new RKG provide guidance in such areas as preserving the context of records, organization and level of detail, and retention time and records disposal.

Final Report to SSA: No Board Certification Requirement for Psychological Consultants
A final report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) about making improvements in the U.S. Social Security Administration's (SSA) disability determination process does not include a recommendation from the interim report requiring board certification for psychologists working in the SSA system. APA had advocated that IOM should not include the board certification requirement for psychologists.
